Edinburgh

£480.00

Painted this on a quiet Tuesday morning in Edinburgh. I’d just seen a Velázquez in the National Galleries and walked out into the city still slightly stunned. That probably got into the painting somehow.

This came from a road trip in 2019. My dad and his partner drove me up from London. I’d only been in the UK a few months and barely spoke English. Trying to decode Scottish accents on top of that was something else entirely.

Scotland got to me. We only saw Edinburgh and Glasgow, but it was enough. That morning we walked through the centre and ended up at the National Galleries of Scotland. They have a Velázquez there. An old woman frying eggs. One of those paintings that makes you stop walking.

We came out and the city was just doing its thing. A calm Tuesday. Nothing performing for anyone.

That’s what I tried to paint. Edinburgh not showing off.
