You won't fall in (hopefully). But you can have a view of the Cam that most people never get. The only way to see this stretch is from a punt, one of those flat wooden boats you push with a pole.

The River Cam does something to the light in the late afternoon. The buildings go gold, the water goes cold, and for a moment the whole thing looks like it was painted three hundred years ago by someone who knew what they were doing.

I was standing on a bridge trying not to drop my phone into the water when I saw it. That corridor of light. The arch of the bridge in the distance, the ochre walls closing in on both sides, the sky reflected below.

The water is the painting. Everything else is just context.

I know this water well. I’ve painted it from far, from bridges, from every angle you can think of.

That day I didn’t want the whole picture. I wanted to get close enough that you stop seeing water and start seeing something else entirely.

The lines are real. The reflections are real. But up close it stops making sense in the usual way, and that’s exactly what I was after.

Ocean Wave Oil Painting

This oil painting focuses on what water actually does – the way waves overlap, catch light, and create patterns that exist for seconds before dissolving into the next movement.

Painted in 2025 using traditional oil techniques with an impressionistic approach. The composition captures multiple wave states simultaneously – the peaked crests, the flat troughs, the foam patterns where waves collapse.

Medium: Oil on paper
When: 2025
Size: 32×25cm (about 12.5×10 inches)

Why Ocean Paintings Work

Seascapes appeal to collectors because water never repeats itself. Unlike landscapes with fixed elements, ocean paintings capture something inherently temporary. The specific arrangement of waves, light, and colour in this painting existed for maybe 10-15 minutes before conditions changed.

The blue-green palette creates a calming effect while the varied brushstrokes add movement and energy. This balance between serenity and dynamism makes ocean paintings versatile – they work in both quiet spaces and active rooms.

Oil on Paper

Painting with oils on paper creates different surface qualities than canvas. The paper absorbs some oil, producing matte areas that contrast with glossier passages. This variation adds depth and texture that responds to changing light throughout the day.

October in Portugal. Everyone said it was off-season. The coast had other ideas.
I nearly threw up on the boat. Flat water, barely any swell. Still got me.
Painted this one from dry land, which turned out to be a good call.

October on the Algarve coast feels like summer forgot to leave.

We drove the stretch between Lagos and Carvoeiro in 2024. The kind of road trip where you stop more than you drive. That coastline does something to you. The light comes off the water differently there. Warmer. More insistent.

I went out on a boat to the Benagil Caves. Worth every minute of the journey. The caves are the kind of thing you don’t believe until you’re standing inside them.

The boat, though. Barely any swell. Flat water. I nearly lost my lunch anyway.

Masty III I painted from land. Watching it move through that light was enough. Sometimes the better view is from the shore.

Oil on canvas. One of a kind.
