Westminster Bridge London Watercolour

This watercolour captures Westminster Bridge during that brief window when the setting sun lights up the sky behind Parliament. The silhouetted architecture – Big Ben’s tower, the Gothic spires of Westminster – becomes a dark outline against the warm gradient of evening light.

Painted in 2022 from the South Bank side of the bridge, looking north. The composition includes pedestrians and tourists crossing the bridge, adding human scale to London’s monumental architecture.

Location: Westminster Bridge, London
Painted: 2022
Size: 31×41cm (about 12×16 inches)
Paper: Arches 300gsm

Why Westminster Bridge Paintings Appeal to Collectors

Westminster Bridge offers one of London’s most recognizable views. This particular angle – looking toward Big Ben and Parliament from the bridge itself – appears in countless photographs, but watercolour captures something different: the atmospheric quality of London light.

The painting focuses on backlit conditions, where details dissolve into silhouette and colour becomes the primary subject. The warm sunset tones contrast with the cool grays of the bridge and pavement, creating visual depth without relying on architectural detail.

London Landmarks in Watercolour

Painting London’s iconic locations presents a challenge: how do you show something everyone has seen thousands of times in a way that feels fresh? This painting approaches Westminster by emphasizing the transient elements – the specific quality of evening light, the casual groupings of people, the way weather and atmosphere transform familiar architecture.

The loose watercolour technique keeps the image from becoming too literal or tourist-postcard. Wet-into-wet washes in the sky create soft color transitions, while drier brushwork defines the bridge structure and figures.

What Makes This View Special

Westminster Bridge sits at the heart of London’s political and historical center. The view encompasses multiple layers of British history – medieval Westminster Abbey (just out of frame), Victorian Gothic Parliament buildings, and the bridge itself, rebuilt in 1862.

For collectors, Westminster paintings work because they represent London without needing explanation. Whether you live in the city, visit regularly, or simply appreciate iconic architecture, this view resonates.

The painting includes pedestrians crossing at different paces – some pausing to photograph Parliament, others hurrying home. These human elements prevent the scene from becoming a static architectural study.

—

This is another view from Hampstead Heath park. I made a larger version in square format, which you can also find here on my website. The aim of this painting was to focus on the panorama, and to depict the buildings in the London skyline. You can see the part of the City of London, London Bridge… It’s impressive to see the buildings live because they are really close. Hampstead Heath is a wonderful and very popular park, because you can enjoy a lot of greenery, as you can see at both ends of the picture.

Both Hampstead and Hampstead Heath are areas that I have painted a lot, as I have spent a lot of time there. They are and have been part of my work practically since I started painting watercolours.

This painting was born from a plein air session with fellow artists, right in the heart of one of London’s most iconic spots. Tower Bridge is a place where the city never stops—tourists, locals, boats drifting on the Thames. While painting, I had hundreds of people stopping to watch and talk to me, turning the moment into a shared experience rather than just a solitary study.

Capturing this scene from life meant working fast. The light was constantly shifting, demanding quick decisions and confident brushstrokes. That’s the beauty of plein air painting—it carries an energy, a spontaneity that studio work can’t quite replicate.

In this piece, I focused on rendering the tower with detail, making it the anchor of the composition, while letting the trees and vegetation on the right remain loose and fluid, balancing precision with movement.

This painting isn’t just a view of Tower Bridge; it’s a moment frozen in time—one that holds the rhythm of the city, the energy of passersby, and the thrill of painting in the open air.

Flask Walk Hampstead Watercolour

This watercolour captures Flask Walk on a quiet winter morning, when the light is crisp and shadows stretch across the pavement. The street – barely wide than a single car – runs between Hampstead Village’s main thoroughfare and the residential streets climbing toward the Heath.

Painted in 2022 from the corner where Flask Walk meets Well Walk, looking west toward The Flask pub. The composition emphasizes the architectural texture of Hampstead: Victorian shop fronts, terracotta brick, white-painted Georgian windows, and the slightly haphazard way historic buildings lean into each other.

Location: Flask Walk, Hampstead Village, London NW3
Painted: 2022
Size: 31×41cm (about 12×16 inches)
Paper: Arches 300gsm cold press
Medium: Transparent watercolour

—

Why Flask Walk Appeals to Collectors

Flask Walk represents Hampstead at its most characteristically village-like. Unlike the main High Street with its chain stores and traffic, this narrow pedestrian street retains the scale and atmosphere of pre-urban London. The Flask pub (visible on the left) dates to 1663, though the current building is Victorian.

The street’s name comes from the 18th century when locals would collect spring water from the nearby Wells and sell it in flasks to Londoners seeking Hampstead’s supposedly medicinal waters. That history – village becoming fashionable suburb while somehow remaining village – makes Hampstead distinct among London neighborhoods.

This painting focuses on morning light, when the low winter sun creates strong shadows and picks out architectural details. The cool blue-gray palette reflects both the time of year and Hampstead’s characteristic color scheme: lots of white-painted wood, gray stone, muted brick.

—

Painting Hampstead Village Streets

Hampstead’s tight streets present interesting compositional challenges. Flask Walk in particular offers strong linear perspective – the buildings create natural leading lines drawing the eye down the street. The slight curve in the road prevents the composition from becoming too rigid.

The watercolour technique uses layered washes to build up architectural form. Darker values in doorways and windows create depth, while the white of the paper (left mostly unpainted in the sky) keeps the overall feeling light despite the detailed buildings.

Small figures appear in the middle distance – a couple walking, someone entering a shop. These human elements give scale and suggest the everyday life of the village without making the painting about specific people.

—

What Makes This View Special

Flask Walk sits in the heart of what real estate agents call “Hampstead Village” – the cluster of historic streets between Hampstead tube station and the Heath. Writers, artists, and intellectuals have lived here for centuries. John Constable painted on the Heath. Keats lived two minutes’ walk away. The Freud Museum is around the corner.

For collectors, Flask Walk works because it captures recognizable Hampstead without being too literal. If you know the area, you’ll recognize The Flask pub and the specific bend in the street. If you don’t know Hampstead, it still reads as quintessentially London village architecture – Georgian proportions, Victorian details, the mix of residential and commercial that makes London neighborhoods walkable.

The painting emphasizes architecture and atmosphere over people or activity. This makes it suitable for spaces where you want calm rather than energy – a study, bedroom, or quiet corner rather than a busy living room.
